According to Wikipedia, the word 'taboo' was first heard by Europeans when Captain James Cook visited Tonga, where the natives used it for any food that they were not allowed to eat, or anything that they were forbidden to use. Wikipedia also gives equivalent words in Fijian, Maori and Hawaiian; these are all languages in the Polynesian family.
